Super Charging the Audiotrak Prodigy HD2 with Burson Audio opamps:
We left no stone unturned to push the performance of this soundcard to a whole new level. First we replaced their stocked opamps with 3 Burson Audio dual opamps. The Bursons are regarded by the audiophiles and the recording industry, as simply the best alternative to IC opamps. Their performance significantly surpasses the once popular OPA627. This mod alone pushed the design complexity of the HD2 beyond many audiophile DACs or CD players. The power supply of the HD2 has also been optimized for the Burson Opamps.
A disappointment with the original design were the gold plated RCA connectors. On closer inspection, we found them to be gold plated aluminum connectors with poor soldering. So we removed the RCA connectors and replaced them with top quality CNC RCA sockets. We then widened the distance between the connectors to better accommodate the usually bigger audiophile RCA cables.
Connecting the Prodigy HD2 to one of our reference setups, the effect of the upgrade was obvious. Compared to the stocked version, this supercharged soundcard projects a much wider soundstage. Mid and high were fuller and much more realistic. Like a microscope that has been tuned and upgraded, details and intonations can now be heard and analysed at a micro level. The bass went deeper and more importantly gained control and definition.
This Prodigy/Burson beast outperforms many audiophile CD players in the market, that cost many times the amount in price. This soundcard is truly a must have for those who wish to turn their humble PC into a piece of hi fidelity audio equipment.
